Impaired boater charged after Peterborough area drowning: OPP
Police say the 28-year-old operator was arrested after a passenger fell overboard, and divers later recovered the body of a 39-year-old man.
A 39-year-old Oshawa man died Tuesday after falling from a boat into the Otonabee River near Peterborough, Ont. The incident occurred on the river Tuesday afternoon.
The victim was not wearing a life-jacket when he went into the water Tuesday afternoon after another boat passed by while his group was travelling on the river.
Peterborough County OPP officers responded to a 2:30 p.m. call and learned through conversations with the three passengers that the group had been drinking alcohol. An officer demanded the operator provide a breath sample.
Divers from the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit found the man's body around 9 p.m. Tuesday and pronounced him dead on the scene.
The operator, a 28-year-old from Whitchurch-Stouville, was arrested and faces charges of operation causing death and impaired operation with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres.
