On Thursday, gunmen abducted about 19 prospective National Youth Service Corps members traveling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Umunoha, Imo State.
Security operatives utilized drones on Friday to identify the suspects' location, but the Imo State Police Command reports the camp is mined with Improvised Explosive Devices , forcing agencies to proceed cautiously.
The Commissioner of Police, Audu Bosso, confirmed on Saturday that 10 victims were rescued at the scene, while authorities are still verifying the exact number remaining in captivity.
Police are preparing to enter the area using high-velocity bulldozers and APCs to extract remaining victims, as Bosso stated the equipment is essential to rescue captives safely without further harm.
No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction as the investigation continues, and PREMIUM TIMES reports authorities remain focused on securing the release of the remaining prospective members.
