Bundestag Lifts Parliamentary Immunity of Two MPs

Summary
Members of the Bundestag enjoy parliamentary immunity, which protects them from prosecution. However, the German Parliament has the authority to waive this protection — and has done so in two recent cases. On Wednesday evening, the Bundestag unanimously approved the recommendations of its Immunity Committee to lift the immunity of Hannes Gnauck, an MP from the Alternative for Germany (AfD), and Gökay Akbulut, a politician from the Left Party. The decision allows legal proceedings to move forward against both lawmakers. In the case of Brandenburg AfD member Gnauck, the Bundestag authorized the requested measures by relevant authorities. Details of the investigations have not been publicly disclosed. The lifting of immunity does not imply guilt; it simply permits prosecutors to pursue ongoing inquiries.
