Daylong ‘Community Stoppage’ Boycotts Stores Amid Demands to Stop Immigration Raids
Advocates call for a boycott and strikes to protest ICE raids that arrested nearly 2,800 immigrants across seven counties since June, highlighting community economic impact.
- At midnight Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2025, a coalition of community organizations, labor unions and immigrant rights groups began a daylong community stoppage, boycotting Target, Home Depot, Walmart and McDonald’s.
- On June 6, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement launched mass raids, resulting in 2,792 arrests in seven Los Angeles counties, including a Penske truck raid at Wilshire Boulevard's Home Depot.
- Beginning at midnight, protesters held a fast-food workers strike near MacArthur Park, followed by a 5 a.m. walkout and marches to the L.A. County Board of Supervisors Hall of Administration at noon and Placita Olvera at 5 p.m.
- At MacArthur Park, several hundred workers, organizers and immigrant advocates gathered, hearing speeches from union organizers, community activists and LA City Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez.
- Ahead of future events, organizers said this community stoppage is the precursor to more actions calling on the federal government to stop what raids critics called racist, as part of the Summer of Resistance’s 30-day rapid response plan.
