IMF Looking to Set up Venezuela Office, Says No Programme Requested
The fund is discussing a local presence to expand technical cooperation and policy advice, while officials say Caracas has sought no IMF lending or financing.
- On Thursday, The International Monetary Fund announced it is looking to establish an office in Caracas, though IMF Communications Director Julie Kozack stressed that Venezuelan authorities have not requested an IMF programme or financing.
- The Washington-based lender resumed dealings with Caracas in April after a majority of members recognized President Delcy Rodriguez's interim government, which took power following the seizure of former leader Nicolas Maduro during Operation Absolute Resolve.
- An IMF staff team visited Caracas in August to discuss technical work on macroeconomic statistics, monetary operations, and foreign exchange, following devastating June 24 earthquakes when Caracas drew $346mn from its reserve tranche.
- The Inter-American Development Bank president Ilan Goldfajn is pushing for a $2.5bn financing package, but board directors are resisting because the lending window requires an active IMF programme, which Caracas has paused to prioritize oil deals.
- Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva suggested the IMF office could open in 2027, while President Delcy Rodriguez, who recently met President Donald Trump in New York, frames re-engagement as a diplomatic milestone rather than a financial one.
