IMF says AI investment keeps global growth around 3%, with major Asia benefits
The International Monetary Fund attributes 3% global growth to heavy artificial intelligence investment while warning of potential disruption to 40% of jobs worldwide.
- On Tuesday in Bangkok, the International Monetary Fund flagged significant risks from a potential AI investment boom collapse, growing debt levels, and prolonged Middle East conflict, identifying an AI-driven market correction as one of three "salient risks" to global financial stability.
- Rising leverage and "circular financing" arrangements amplify these risks as hyperscalers—large cloud computing and data center operators—channeled roughly $300 billion in equity and $650 billion in debt into weaker AI companies, with partners committing $1.4 trillion in future revenues.
- In stress tests combining AI disappointment with elevated interest rates and energy shocks, institutions holding 22% of global banking assets would fall into the "weak" category with post-stress capital ratios below 7%, up from 18% in last year's exercise.
- Josh Lipsky, Vice President of International Economics at the Atlantic Council, said few governments are heeding IMF calls to shrink borrowing. "France, Germany, the US all need to do fiscal consolidation, but they're moving in the opposite direction," Lipsky said.
- The IMF predicts 3.4% growth in 2027 based on assumptions that shipping conditions normalize by October 2027; however, a deeper war keeping oil prices above $130 through the first quarter could reduce growth by half a percentage point.
