IMF Names Silvana Tenreyro as New Chief Economist
Tenreyro will oversee the IMF’s economic projections and regular updates as global growth faces inflation, tariff changes and Middle East conflict.
- On Tuesday, The International Monetary Fund announced Silvana Tenreyro as its new Economic Counsellor and Director of the Research Department, effective August 10, 2026.
- Tenreyro succeeds Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, who recently returned to academia; top economists in this role typically serve between three and seven years, mirroring tenures by former chief economists Olivier Blanchard and Gita Gopinath.
- Currently an economics professor at the London School of Economics, Tenreyro previously served as an external member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee from 2017 to 2023 and holds a PhD from Harvard University.
- A Fellow of the British Academy and the Econometric Society, Tenreyro advises on artificial intelligence impacts as part of Anthropic’s Economic Advisory Council and served as President of the European Economic Association.
- IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva praised Tenreyro's "intellectual leadership" amidst global uncertainty as she prepares to navigate inflation from Middle East conflict and rapid artificial intelligence adoption.

Who is Silvana Tenreyro? IMF appoints former Bank of England policymaker as chief economist
The International Monetary Fund has named Silvana Tenreyro, a former Bank of England policymaker and London School of Economics professor, as its new chief economist and Director of the Research Department, succeeding Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas from August 10.
This is Silvana Tenreyro, former director of the Bank of England; from August 10 she will work next to the managing director of the agency, Kristalina Georgieva
Silvana Tenreyro will be the Fund’s Economic Advisor and Director of the Research Department (RES) since August. “ Silvana’s combination of intellectual leadership and policy expertise will help ensure that the Fund’s analytical work,” said Kristalina Georgieva.
This is the first time that the position has been vested in someone from Latin America. The expert is on the economic advisory board of Anthropic, the owner of the IA Claude, and in 2023 she received the distinction of Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
