IMF Names Silvana Tenreyro as New Chief Economist

Tenreyro will oversee the IMF’s economic projections and regular updates as global growth faces inflation, tariff changes and Middle East conflict.

  • On Tuesday, The International Monetary Fund announced Silvana Tenreyro as its new Economic Counsellor and Director of the Research Department, effective August 10, 2026.
  • Tenreyro succeeds Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, who recently returned to academia; top economists in this role typically serve between three and seven years, mirroring tenures by former chief economists Olivier Blanchard and Gita Gopinath.
  • Currently an economics professor at the London School of Economics, Tenreyro previously served as an external member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee from 2017 to 2023 and holds a PhD from Harvard University.
  • A Fellow of the British Academy and the Econometric Society, Tenreyro advises on artificial intelligence impacts as part of Anthropic’s Economic Advisory Council and served as President of the European Economic Association.
  • IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva praised Tenreyro's "intellectual leadership" amidst global uncertainty as she prepares to navigate inflation from Middle East conflict and rapid artificial intelligence adoption.
