Türkiye: Jailed Mayor’s Lawyer Detained
An Istanbul court’s decision on June 19, 2025, to allow the detention of a leading defense lawyer for the jailed Istanbul mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu appears to be in reprisal for his legal representation of his client, Human Rights Watch and the Turkey Human Rights Litigation Support Project said today.
Former IMM Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was arrested and sent to Marmara Prison as part of a corruption investigation into the IMM. A new detail has been added to the details of the bribery scheme at the municipality. Businessman Halil Kurdu, who testified to the prosecutor's office as a complainant, explained the dirty scheme during İmamoğlu's term as Beylikdüzü Mayor.

Detained in Silivri, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu addressed members of the higher judiciary in a statement he made on his social media account. Stating that "We are not being tried, we are being directly punished," İmamoğlu said, "Our lives are under threat."
