AirPods With Cameras, Coming Soon, Could Be Apple’s First AI Accessory, Report Says
The earbuds are in design validation testing and may use low-resolution cameras to help Siri identify objects and give landmark-based directions.
- On Thursday, Mark Gurman reported that Apple has reached the late stages of development for new AirPods with built-in cameras, with prototypes now in design validation testing. The design and feature set are nearly finalized ahead of production.
- Apple initially planned a first-half 2026 launch, but delays to the upgraded Siri pushed the timeline. Gurman says the improved Siri is 'on track' for September with iOS 27, potentially aligning the AirPods release with that timeframe.
- These AirPods will feature longer stems to accommodate camera technology, resembling the AirPods Pro 3 design. A 'small' LED light will indicate when 'visual data is being fed into the cloud' for Siri processing.
- The cameras 'aren't designed' to snap photos but capture 'visual information in low resolution' for AI queries. Users can ask Siri about surrounding objects or receive turn-by-turn navigation assistance, mirroring image uploads to AI chatbots.
- Apple is also developing smart glasses and an AI pendant that could launch as soon as early 2027. These initiatives position the company to compete with Meta and OpenAI in the emerging AI wearables market.
