Katin Houser Throws 3 TD Passes and Runs for a Score as Illinois Beats UAB 42-23 in Season Opener

On Thursday, quarterback Katin Houser led the Illinois Fighting Illini to a 42-23 victory over the UAB Blazers in their season opener, accounting for four total touchdowns in his debut.
New defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck debuted the Illinois 3-5-5 defense at Gies Memorial Stadium in Champaign, though the Illini struggled with missed tackles as the UAB Blazers outgained them 413-333.
Ty Robinson caught a 54-yard Hail Mary pass from Houser on the final play of the first half, while Collin Dixon added two touchdowns and Ca'Lil Valentine rushed 11 times for 88 yards and a score.
The UAB Blazers showed resilience after firing head coach Trent Dilfer last season, ending a 42-game road losing streak and keeping the game competitive despite the final margin.
Illinois now prepares to host Duke on Sept. 12, while the UAB Blazers return home to host Louisiana-Monroe on the same date.
