Illegal skin lightening cream being sold in butchers across UK, watchdog warns
CTSI reports illegal skin lightening products containing banned substances are widespread in UK shops and online, with 62 prosecutions in Southwark since 2002.
- This month, the Chartered Trading Standards Institute warned illegal skin lightening creams are being sold in butchers, specialist food shops, small grocery shops and online across the UK, with the BBC reporting on their dangers.
- Experts point to social and personal factors, including colourism and harmful beauty standards in some Black and Asian communities, driving demand for illegal skin lightening products, the CTSI said.
- Evidence from enforcement cases includes many illegal creams containing hydroquinone, mercury, and corticosteroids, which can cause skin thinning and organ damage, a recent fine was over 30,000 pounds.
- Trading Standards urged businesses to check supply chains and seek advice, while consumers were advised to avoid unverified sellers, never use on children, and report suspicious products, CTSI lead officer Richard Knight said.
- Longstanding records show Southwark prosecuted 62 companies since 2002, with the impact most pronounced among Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities and growing sales in everyday local stores.
