IKEA Launches Second-Hand Marketplace for Its Furniture

The platform offers automated listings, cash or gift-card payouts and prices that are about 60% lower than new items, Ikea said.

  • Ikea launched a second-hand marketplace for members of its Ikea Family loyalty scheme, positioning the platform to compete with established resale sites like Vinted and eBay.
  • According to Ikea sustainability manager Greg Lucas, the way people furnish their homes has changed, with more customers seeking pre-owned furniture to create personal home environments.
  • Sellers scan items to generate automated listings with pricing recommendations, professional photography, and descriptions; proceeds can be received in cash or as an Ikea gift card with a 15 per cent top-up.
  • While most home furnishings are eligible, the scheme excludes mattresses, appliances, and food; buyers can also order free spare parts, such as restraint brackets, to secure furniture to walls.
  • The platform functions as an extension of the Ikea Buy Back scheme launched in 2021; the retailer plans to trial the integration into the marketplace in Spain and Portugal in late December.
