IKEA customer told to keep sink dry when it starts rusting after just 11 months
IKEA said it replaced the item free of charge after reviewing the complaint and finding no wider product issue, the company said.
After a year-long dispute, IKEA replaced a rusted sink for Alison Theaker, a resident of Kingsbridge, Devon, installing the new unit late last month to "ensure a positive outcome."
Theaker noticed rust on a sink installed just 11 months after purchasing a new kitchen; despite a five-year guarantee, IKEA initially denied her claim, attributing damage to "excess moisture."
During the process, a support representative suggested Theaker should have "kept the sink dry," which she found frustrating given her frequently used kitchen sink remained rust-free.
Resolving the issue required nearly a year of persistence, including five emails and two phone calls, prompting Theaker to ask, "How much has that cost IKEA?"
An IKEA spokesperson stated their assessment found no evidence of a wider product issue, describing the replacement as a "gesture of goodwill" provided on individual merit.
