IIO Investigating Death in Fernie
Investigators are reviewing whether police action or inaction played a role after an unresponsive man was found in the Elk River, officials said.
The Independent Investigations Office is investigating the death of a man in Fernie after the Coroners Service reported the case on July 14, 2026, confirming a previous interaction with the Elk Valley RCMP.
On July 11, 2026, the Elk Valley RCMP were called after a member of the public located an unresponsive man in the Elk River, prompting the IIO to examine potential connections between the death and officer actions.
Initially reported missing on June 20, 2026, the man prompted a search by Fernie Search and Rescue using a helicopter and ground teams joined by police and emergency service workers to scan adjacent areas.
IIO investigators have identified witnesses and collected evidence, with the investigation remaining ongoing as they continue to analyze materials and conduct further interviews.
Witnesses with information regarding this matter should contact the IIO Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or submit details via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
