Iowa Department of Agriculture Hands Out Fund for Lake Watershed Improvements
IOWA, AUG 5 – Funding more than doubled from 2024 to $451,176 this year to support conservation practices reducing nutrient runoff at eight Iowa public lakes, officials said.
- On Tuesday, IDALS and the DNR announced nine Iowa Soil and Water Conservation District partners will receive $451,176 from the Publicly Owned Lakes program.
- Last week, the Iowa DNR recommended avoiding swimming at 15 beaches due to high E. coli levels linked to rainfall and advisories last year.
- Among the eight public lakes, allocations ranged from $7,012.50 for Casey Lake to $133,793.19 for Three Mile Lake this year.
- Through the program, Iowa Soil and Water Conservation Districts will help private landowners implement cover crops, sediment control basins, and grassed waterways.
- Amid ongoing conservation efforts, DNR Director Kayla Lyon noted cooperation with landowners is fundamental to maintaining Iowa’s lakes' long-term health and accessibility.
