Idaho GOP’s New Platform Calls for End to ‘Inherently Unjust’ Property Taxes
The platform directs lawmakers to replace the revenue with alternative funding, as property taxes brought in $2.2 billion in 2024, the Tax Foundation said.
- Idaho Republican delegates approved an updated platform this month calling for the total elimination of property taxes, which the party now describes as an "inherently unjust tax" that threatens homeownership.
- Former state Sen. Scott Herndon led the charge at the convention to replace property taxes with "revenue sources that do not place a lien on a citizen's home," advocating for controlling spending rather than raising other taxes.
- House Minority Leader Ilana Rubel, D-Boise, warned that eliminating property taxes would be "disastrous for schools" and shift the burden to regressive sales taxes, which notably include grocery taxes.
- The platform also directs the Idaho Legislature to sever ties with accreditors that "promote ideological agendas" antithetical to party values, and delegates voted to remove a long-standing resolution affirming support for Israel.
- It remains to be seen whether legislator resistance to these platform mandates will serve as grounds for censure during the coming legislative session, as central committees can petition to punish officials for violating the platform.
