McVitie's Owner Sets Target to Double Sales of 'Healthier' Products
Pladis said 10% of its sales already come from better-nutrition products as it aims to double that share by 2030.
Pladis plans to reformulate popular snacks including Jaffa Cakes, aiming to reduce sugar, salt, and saturated fat while boosting fibre and protein content. The company has not yet confirmed specific recipe changes or timelines.
To guide its recipe changes, Pladis built a global nutrition framework utilizing established systems including France's Nutri-Score, Australia's Health Star Rating, and the UK Nutrient Profile Model. This balances nutrients consumers seek to increase with those they aim to reduce.
In 2020, Pladis reformulated snacks including Original Digestives, Rich Tea, Chocolate Digestives, Hobnobs, Chocolate Hobnobs, Caramel Digestives, and Ginger Nuts to cut sugar and salt. These efforts removed 676 tonnes of sugar, equal to about 169 million teaspoons.
Dr Jennifer Moss, chief research and development officer at Pladis, said consumers prioritize taste but increasingly want choice. "We believe the brands that succeed in the future will be the ones that can deliver both," Moss said.
By 2030, Pladis targets doubling the sales volume of products offering what it considers a "better nutritional balance." Currently, around 10 per cent of its sales volume meets these new criteria.
