Ice ‘extremely unsafe,’ Hamilton police say after six end up in water

On March 7, two youths fell through the ice near the Pier 7 Boardwalk at 121 Haida Ave, and a bystander told officers six people were pulled safely to shore.
Fluctuating, record-warm temperatures left the ice thin and unstable, with temperatures hitting 18 C on Saturday and onlookers warning the pair to get off the ice.

Hamilton Police Service warned ice conditions are 'extremely unsafe' and urged residents to stay off frozen lakes, ponds and waterways; the marine unit and Toronto Police Service report daily incidents on unsafe ice, while the Lifesaving Society highlights drowning and hypothermia risks.
Police cautioned that going onto the ice endangers rescuers and bystanders, as four people and several bystanders entered the water trying to help, and the Lifesaving Society says ice should be at least 10 cm thick.
