ICE detainee deaths skyrocket amid immigration crackdown
ICE said four delayed reports brought 2026 detainee deaths to 17, more than half of all 33 deaths reported in 2025.
- On Friday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement released delayed reports detailing four detainee deaths from January, missing a 90-day congressional deadline as the 2026 custody death toll reached 17.
- ICE Director Todd Lyons told Congress on Thursday that the spike in deaths stems partly from the agency maintaining its "highest amount of detention" since 2003, with over 60,000 immigrants currently held.
- The 17 deaths recorded this year represent more than half of the 33 reported throughout 2025, while detention numbers were 70% higher under President Donald Trump than under President Joe Biden.
- Following his congressional testimony, Lyons resigned; the Department of Homeland Security defended conditions, stating "Being in detention is a choice" and encouraging immigrants to use the CBP Home App.
- Published reports detail the deaths of Victor Manuel Diaz, Heber Sanchez Dominguez, Parady La, and Luis Nunez Caceres, with the agency labeling two January cases as "presumed suicide" pending investigation.
