ICE begins deporting Haitians who lost TPS back to homeland

The charter flight was the first since the administration ended Temporary Protected Status for more than 300,000 Haitians, officials said.

  • On Thursday, an ICE Air flight departed Alexandria, Louisiana, transporting over 160 Haitians to Cap-Haitien, marking the first deportation flight since the Supreme Court allowed Trump to terminate Temporary Protected Status.
  • Earlier this year, the Supreme Court permitted the administration to wind down Temporary Protected Status, which had shielded about 350,000 Haitians since 2010 after a deadly earthquake.
  • The State Department maintains a Level 4 "Do Not Travel" advisory for Haiti citing rampant crime, while Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, said the agency is struggling as people are "forcibly returned home."
  • Customs Enforcement plans to increase flights to twice a week, returning about 250 Haitians weekly, while protections for about 170,000 people from Salvador are set to expire in September.
  • Both Republicans and Democrats have criticized the policy, warning that forcing Haitians out of the United States will cause worker shortages in healthcare, as protections for roughly 600,000 Venezuelans have already expired.
