Ex-Chicago Area Teacher in ICE Custody, Awaiting Deportation for Role in 2024 Southwest Side Mass Shooting
Giovanna Moreno Occhipinti is accused of driving two alleged Tren de Aragua members to the shooting and helping them evade police, DHS said.
- Federal immigration authorities arrested former Illinois educator Giovanna Moreno Occhipinti last month, who remains in custody pending removal after DHS accused her of involvement in a Gage Park shooting.
- DHS alleges Occhipinti drove Ricardo Padilla and Edward Cermeno to a Gage Park house party in December 2024 where both men, tied to the violent Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, opened fire and killed people.
- Chicago police arrested Occhipinti shortly after the shooting with weapons in her vehicle but released her without notifying ICE; The Department then intervened after "the Cook County State's Attorney's Office determined it would not move forward with criminally prosecuting."
- On Monday, DHS announced Occhipinti remains in federal custody awaiting deportation after entering the United States in October 2021 under a visa waiver program but failing to depart by January 2022.
- While Illinois officials confirmed Occhipinti taught in the state, the Illinois State Board refused to disclose her specific school, and officials stated, "Everyone wanted to sweep it under the rug like it wasn't true, and yet, here we are today.
