ICC prosecutor Karim Khan suspended by UK's Bar Standards Board
A confidential 18-month inquiry found a factual basis for misconduct allegations, and the ICC’s 125 member states will vote on Khan’s future next month.
- The International Criminal Court's 125 member states will convene a special session on July 24 to vote on the removal of Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan following his suspension over sexual misconduct allegations.
- Britain's Bar Standards Board imposed an immediate interim suspension on Khan this Friday, following an earlier June 8 suspension by the International Criminal Court governing body after an 18-month inquiry found a "factual basis" for sexual misconduct allegations.
- Khan denies all allegations and intends to challenge his suspension. "Under the BSB's Enforcement Regulations, the interim suspension must now be considered by an Interim Suspension Panel at a hearing within the next four weeks," the board said.
- The leadership crisis complicates operations at the International Criminal Court, which already faces United States sanctions against 11 judges and prosecutors over investigations into Afghanistan and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant.
- After concluding the prosecutor committed serious misconduct, the court's governing body recommended his removal from office. Member states will determine his fate at the July 24 special session in The Hague.
