'She Was Our Everything': Aniah Blanchard’s Family Speaks as Her Killer Gets Life
A jury found him guilty of murder and felony murder after prosecutors presented about 40 witnesses and video from the night of the abduction.
On Thursday, May 7, 2026, Retired Circuit Judge Tom Young Jr. sentenced Ibraheem Yazeed to life in prison for the 2019 murder of 19-year-old Aniah Blanchard, marking the maximum penalty allowed.
Blanchard, a Southern Union College student from Homewood, disappeared from an Auburn convenience store in October 2019; her remains were discovered a month later in Macon County.
Prosecutors called about 40 witnesses during six days of testimony; although Yazeed faced capital murder charges initially, the jury convicted him on lesser counts of felony murder and murder.
The case sparked the 2022 passage of Aniah's Law, which restricts bail for violent offenders. Aniah's mother, Angela Harris, told the court, "I'm happy the judge did the right thing, and we got the right justice for Aniah."
Yazeed's defense team confirmed plans to appeal within 42 days. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall stated the sentence fulfills what "the weight of this crime demanded," providing closure for the family.
