MoD Signs ₹1,950 Crore Defence Deal for Mountain Radars, Boosting Air Defence Capabilities
The indigenously designed systems will improve surveillance in high-altitude terrain and support the Air Force’s air defence network, the ministry said.
- On Tuesday, the Defence Ministry signed a Rs 1,950 crore contract with Bharat Electronics Limited to procure two mountain radars for the Air Force, targeting surveillance gaps along high-altitude frontiers.
- Ridgelines and deep valleys in high-altitude sectors create radar shadow zones exploitable by low-flying fighters, drones, and cruise missiles, necessitating fixed systems to address long-standing gaps in India's mountainous terrain.
- Designed by the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment under the Defence Research and Development Organisation , the radars will be manufactured by BEL under the Buy category and deployed at Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir and Nagaland.
- Procuring these systems aligns with the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives, with officials stating the installation will strengthen the country's air defence network and improve operational preparedness.
- This contract follows the Defence Acquisition Council granting Acceptance of Necessity on March 27 for capital acquisition proposals worth about Rs 2.38 lakh crore, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
