70-Year-Old Arrested in Connection with a Decades-Old Jacksonville Cold Case
Investigators say new tips and forensic work helped identify Gary Edward Glowacz, ending a nearly 40-year search for answers in the killing.
On Thursday, authorities announced arrests in two separate cold cases: Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters charged 70-year-old Gary Edward Glowacz with the 1987 murder of Melissa Taylor Ellison, while Orlando Police charged 68-year-old Willie Carpenter with the 1988 killing of Diane Matthews.
Investigators identified Glowacz as the man who killed Ellison during a 1987 home burglary, beating the 20-year-old to death with a log while her 13-month-old daughter, Casie, remained unharmed in the home.
Modern DNA testing established a strong "evidentiary link" between Carpenter and the crime scene using preserved evidence from 1988, leading to his arrest by U.S. Marshals in North Carolina.
Waters described the arrests as a "shining symbol of our agency's commitment" to seeking justice, offering families a step toward healing after nearly 40 years of uncertainty.
Advancements in forensic science allowed Cold Case Units in both cities to resolve these decades-old murders, demonstrating how persistent investigation and evolving technology can eventually provide accountability.
