I say look to the auto industry and let data centers build if they power, cool themselves
"While I am not a designer of data centers, I have designed many buildings, mostly restaurants. In all, the crux of designing anything is to keep it simple and efficient. I would ask for the menu and what the prep plans were, how often supplies would be delivered, how many people would be served. I'd have it from there. All this applies to data centers. How many servers will need to be housed, how much power and water will be consumed? The first is simple. The second and third are more complex, but still simple. I would think back to what was done before, being a Detroit guy, I would naturally think of the Ford Rouge Plant. It was a massive complex. The Rouge plant could build a car from raw materials. Ford Motor made the complex self-supporting, it used its own power plants and water plants. Ford Motors generated more power than needed and fed back into the grid, so it was a win/win for all. With the advent of micro nuclear power plants, there are several companies involved with development of these power plants. The design mandate will be 125% of the needed power to be generated on site. That's very doable. As for the water consumption for cooling, again, look to the auto industry, where you build a radiator large enough to dissipate the excess BTU’s heat generated, or basically treat the coolers like an oversized water cooler car engine. It's a closed-loop system. Don’t over complicate the issue, it is all as simple as you want it be. I would object to any data center proposal based on the above. The additional thing I would add is to ensure there is a rail service available. So, I am not understanding the issue. Let them build if they can afford to." - An Ocala resident shares his opinion.
