E-bike rider sentenced after killing great-grandfather, 91, on pavement
Clifford Cage received a 15-month suspended sentence for manslaughter after hitting a 91-year-old pedestrian with his e-bike on a pavement obscured by an overgrown tree.
- On Wednesday , Clifford Cage was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court to 15 months' imprisonment, suspended for two years, for manslaughter after hitting 91-year-old Jim Blackwood in Rochester on July 6, 2023.
- After two near‑misses on the road, Cage said he moved onto the pavement, estimating his speed at around 12mph and noting an overgrown tree obscured the footpath on City Way, Rochester.
- Released 999 call and CCTV showed Cage stayed at the scene, asked if Mr Blackwood was hurt, and he later died on October 13.
- The Crown Prosecution Service described the verdict as a 'legal first', and Christine White, daughter of Mr Blackwood, called the ruling 'historic' and urged safer streets.
- Judge Julian Smith emphasised the legal gap between Victorian 1861 law of wanton and furious driving and manslaughter, prompting calls to rethink e‑bike age limits.
