Five-time world runner-up Thierry Neuville needs just six more points to finally win the world title for the first time. Before the final race of the season, Rally Japan, he had a 25-point lead over Otto Tänak, but suffered powertrain problems on the first day of racing in the Land of the Rising Sun and finished 14th, with the Estonian fastest. So the possibility of a turnaround now exists as there are still 30 points to go.
