Hydrogen-Powered Train: India's first hydrogen-powered coach successfully tested in Chennai
CHENNAI, TAMIL NADU, INDIA, JUL 25 – India's first 1,200 horsepower hydrogen train coach was tested using indigenous technology as part of a green initiative to reduce carbon emissions, officials said.
- On July 25, 2025, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the successful test of the Driving Power Car at ICF, Chennai.
- The coach was developed indigenously at ICF, according to Vaishnaw, and is slated for a trial run on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana.
- This model demonstrates hydrogen technology's emission-free operation, with the hydrogen train engine producing 1,200 HP, the highest output globally, and operating on hydrogen fuel cells, it emits only water and heat.
- Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw called it a `historic milestone in green rail technology`, adding that officials expect operational costs to decrease with scaling and innovation.
- The Ministry of Railways has allocated Rs 2,800 crore for 35 hydrogen trains, and the full rake will be delivered to Northern Railway by the last week of August 25.
