Hydrogen future of transportation industry; trials underway on 10 routes in country, says Nitin Gadkari
The ministry is testing hydrogen fuel on 10 routes as India prepares its first hydrogen train and expands alternative-fuel transport plans.
- Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Thursday that the government is conducting trials on 10 routes across the country to test hydrogen as fuel, calling it the "future of the transportation industry."
- Indian Railways will launch the country's first hydrogen train on July 17, 2026, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagging off service between Jind and Sonipat, Haryana, featuring fares from Rs 5 to Rs 25.
- Delhi is considering hydrogen-powered buses using municipal waste, with Gadkari recently confirming that hydrogen fuel produced through bio-digester technology could power the capital's public transport.
- To improve safety, the ministry eased procedures for 600 bus body manufacturers, reducing testing charges by 50 per cent and shortening approval timelines from 16 weeks to 6 weeks for 75,000 employees.
- Despite ranking 3rd globally, India's automobile industry faces a production gap, with manufacturers achieving only 70,000–80,000 buses annually against the 3 lakh units required, prompting efforts to reduce charging costs.
