Evacuation Alert Issued in Northern West Kootenay Due to Inonoaklin Creek Wildfire
Airtankers and helicopters are working to limit spread as crews build control lines and the fire remains visible to Highway 6 travelers.
- A wildfire burning near Highway 6 has grown to 525 hectares, located approximately 17 kilometres northwest of Needles on the north side of the road. The BC Wildfire Service reports the fire currently poses no impact to highway traffic.
- Lightning sparked the blaze on Saturday, July 25, near Inonoaklin Creek, situated between Cherryville and Edgewood. The fire burns in heavy timber on a steep slope, complicating suppression efforts.
- Fire behaviour has been observed at rank 2 and 3, meaning open and surface flame with moderate spread and occasional tree candling. Hot, dry weather and heavy fuel loads continue to challenge containment efforts.
- Airtankers are laying retardant to limit growth to the north, while Heavy Equipment constructs control lines to support containment and crew access. Helicopters bucket water to protect the south flank toward Highway 6.
- The Wildfire Service expects fire activity and smoke to increase as daytime temperatures and wind speeds rise during peak heating hours. Travellers should remain focused on the road and stay clear of personnel working in the area.
