Hurricanes, Chiefs to meet in the Super Rugby final after semifinal blowouts
The Hurricanes scored nine tries and the Chiefs led 42-5 at halftime, setting up a final between the tournament’s top attacking teams.
On Saturday, the Wellington Hurricanes defeated the Auckland Blues 57-21 in their Super Rugby Pacific semi-final at Hnry Stadium, securing a spot in next Saturday's grand final.
Although the Hurricanes struggled for rhythm early, the Blues disrupted the home side's momentum by slowing the game down, leaving the Hurricanes leading 19-14 at halftime.
Nine tries brought the Hurricanes' season tally to 104, making them the first Super Rugby team to reach that milestone, while the Blues' challenge faltered after losing outside backs Caleb Clarke and AJ Lam to head injury assessments.
Hooker Asafo Aumua said, "We had to keep grinding it out and reap the rewards in that second half," as the Hurricanes dominated the breakdown, preventing the Blues from controlling the game's speed.
The Hurricanes will host the Chiefs in next Saturday's grand final after the Chiefs defeated the defending champion Crusaders 49-12 in their semi-final.
