GAZA STRIP, AUG 6 – International experts warn Gaza faces famine after a total blockade and insufficient aid left nearly 90% of households using severe coping methods to find food, officials said.
- By late July 2025, an overwhelming majority of families in Gaza were forced to adopt desperate strategies, including scavenging and risking personal safety, to secure food amid critical shortages.
- The food crisis followed the October 2023 war triggered by a Hamas attack on Israel, combined with Israel’s total blockade on Gaza trucks since early March.
- Families like Amira Muteir’s rely on charity soup kitchens providing only one small plate daily while many suffer from malnutrition and starvation worsened by limited aid.
- Najwa, the mother of malnourished Naim who passed away in March 2024, emphasized the severe hardship her family faces, explaining that they lack even the simplest staples like salt and that she is desperate for any small amount to help sustain them.
- The situation suggests a deepening humanitarian emergency with rising malnutrition deaths and no ceasefire in sight, as food access declines to its lowest level since the war began.
