Hundreds return home as deadly Spain wildfire nears control

A deadly wildfire in southern Spain, suspected to be sparked by a power line fall during a heatwave, has been largely contained, allowing 1,800 evacuees to return home.

  • A wildfire that killed at least 12 people in southern Spain was nearing control on Sunday, allowing hundreds of evacuated residents to return home as firefighters stabilized the blaze in Almería province.
  • Justice Minister Felix Bolanos said Saturday that crews utilized favorable wind and humidity conditions to mount a direct assault on the fire, preventing further advances across the 6,600 hectares of burned terrain.
  • Regional emergency chief Antonio Sanz noted that about 600 of the nearly 1,500 evacuated residents had returned home, while The Civil Guard entered more than 250 homes to verify no one remained inside.
  • "The attack carried out today and the stabilisation of much of the perimeter have made it possible to adopt these measures," Antonio Sanz said, noting authorities are moving toward a return to normality.
  • Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is scheduled to visit the devastated area on Monday, as authorities continue to monitor hotspots and finalize the search for any remaining missing victims.
