Hundreds rescued after Gulmarg cable car develops technical snag
Army, police and disaster teams evacuated tourists after a technical fault halted the cable car service and left 65 cabins stranded.
- On Monday, about 300 tourists were stranded mid-air at the Gulmarg Gondola in Jammu and Kashmir after the cable car system developed a technical glitch, prompting immediate rescue operations.
- The cable car ascends to approximately 14,000 feet at Apharwat Peak across two phases; operators previously suspended the system in January last year due to technical issues.
- Swift rescue efforts by the Army, State Disaster Response Force, National Disaster Response Force, and Police evacuated 116 people from 21 of the 65 stranded cabins.
- Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated, "The situation is completely under control and there is no cause for panic," while Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha directed DGP Nalin Prabhat to oversee operations.
- The Gulmarg Gondola previously witnessed a fatal accident on June 25, 2017, when seven people were killed after strong winds uprooted a tree that struck a cabin.
