Hundreds of Forecourts Breaking Strict New Rule on Petrol Prices
Press Association analysis found 226 registered forecourts had not submitted data or were temporarily closed, despite rules requiring updates within 30 minutes.
- Hundreds of UK petrol stations are failing to meet legal requirements for reporting live price changes to the Government's Fuel Finder system, Press Association analysis found. Many sites have not provided any prices despite mandatory reporting for more than five months.
- The Competition and Markets Authority recommended Fuel Finder in July 2023 to combat weakened competition after drivers paid nearly £1 billion more for fuel annually. Since February 2, forecourts have been legally required to report price changes within half an hour.
- As of 10am on Monday, July 6, only 7,765 of 8,338 operating sites had provided prices to Fuel Finder. Of those reporting, 1,751 last submitted a price change more than a week ago, including 96 that had not updated data for at least a month.
- Simon Williams of the RAC said it is "not plausible that so many haven't changed prices in a week, let alone a month." The Petrol Retailers Association suggested smaller, rural sites receiving infrequent fuel deliveries may struggle with frequent updates.
- The Competition and Markets Authority holds power to take enforcement action against non-compliant retailers. A Department for Energy Security and Net Zero spokesperson stated steps must be taken to ensure all retailers begin reporting prices immediately.
