Hundreds of laid-off CDC employees are being reinstated
- More than 460 employees laid off earlier in 2025 from the CDC received reinstatement notices this Wednesday at the Atlanta-based agency.
- The reinstatements follow a massive workforce reduction plan announced in April aimed at shrinking federal health agencies and cutting spending.
- Approximately 150 reinstated employees came from the CDC’s Environmental Health division, while about 200 others returned to roles within the center focused on preventing HIV, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, and tuberculosis.
- The head of HHS acknowledged that a minimum of 20% of the department’s reductions were errors and confirmed that some of the staff cuts were intended to be temporary from the start.
- Despite these returns, thousands of CDC positions remain vacant, raising concerns about the impact on critical public health programs.
