Hundreds of children told to test for disease in Australia after childcare worker charged with child sex abuse

On July 1, 2025, Victoria Police charged 26-year-old Joshua Dale Brown with more than 70 sexual offenses involving multiple children at a childcare facility located in the Melbourne suburb of Point Cook.
The charges stem from alleged offenses occurring between April 2022 and January 2023, following a significant investigation after discovery of child abuse material in May 2025.
Between January 2017 and May of this year, Brown was employed at 20 different childcare facilities throughout Melbourne, and authorities are currently investigating possible further victims and offenses connected to another center in Essendon.
Chief Health Officer Christian McGrath stated that around 2,600 families had been reached out to and that health officials advised that close to 1,200 children should receive screenings for possible infectious diseases as a precaution, while emphasizing that there is no risk to the wider community.
Premier Jacinta Allan described the crimes as deeply upsetting, pledged support for the affected families, and announced an immediate regulatory review covering Victoria’s child safety measures and related oversight systems.
