Humpback Whale 'Rio' Is Headed West in the Delta Toward San Francisco Bay
Marine mammal experts say the whale’s 24-day inland trip was the longest recorded journey of its kind.

- Researchers identified the whale as CRC-11620, an adult humpback first spotted in San Francisco Bay on September 15, beginning a roughly 24-day inland journey—the longest recorded journey of its kind.
- Angler Denny Glover witnessed the whale breaching south of the Rio Vista Bridge on Wednesday. "Just the part of the whale that breached was longer than our 21-foot boat," Glover said.
- The Marine Mammal Center urges observers to maintain at least 100 yards of distance from Rio. Kathi George, Director of Cetacean Conservation Biology, said the westward move is "a very positive sign."
