Humor laurels for comedian Bill Maher as the Kennedy Center navigates Trump-era upheaval
The honor comes amid a legal fight over the center and renewed tension between Maher and President Donald Trump, with several celebrities expected to appear.
Comedian Bill Maher receives the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on Sunday at the Kennedy Center, marking one of the final major onstage moments scheduled for the historic venue.
Reporting in March about Maher's win sparked White House pushback, with communications director Steven Cheung and press secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissing the news as 'literally FAKE NEWS'.
Maher and President Donald Trump have maintained a fraught relationship, highlighted by a 2013 incident where Trump filed a $5 million lawsuit after Maher jokingly offered the funds if Trump proved he was not the 'spawn of his mother having sex with an orangutan'.
U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper recently ordered removal of Trump's name from the Kennedy Center facade and blocked the president's planned closure of the venue for renovations.
Expected attendees include Arianna Huffington, Stephen A. Smith, Woody Harrelson, and Jay Leno, while the final event scheduled for the venue is 'The Freedom Gathering: A Musical Celebration' on July 3.
