Human Rights Watch says the Taliban detained 6 staff of a women’s and children’s rights group
Human Rights Watch said the detainees were taken without charges after office raids and staff interrogations, while the U.N. sought access to two missing Afghan employees.
- Taliban authorities detained six staff members from the Children Legal Research Foundation on July 18, following a separate report that two Afghan employees of the United Nations mission were held in Herat.
- Since taking power in 2021, the Taliban has excluded women and girls from secondary and higher education, employment, and public life sectors, intensifying restrictions on civil society advocacy.
- The six rights workers were summoned to retrieve confiscated laptops and phones before detention, while the two United Nations staff were taken Sunday in Herat by the Taliban's General Directorate of Intelligence.
- UNAMA called on the Taliban "to ensure compliance with the privileges and immunities of the United Nations and its officials," said U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq, noting the mission has not been allowed to visit the detainees.
- The detentions occur as the Taliban prepares to mark the fifth anniversary of its return to power on Saturday, amid a worsening humanitarian crisis and cross-border clashes with Pakistan.
