Human remains found amid Australia bushfires, police say
Human remains found near a vehicle in the Longwood fire zone mark Victoria's first confirmed bushfire death amid ongoing statewide emergency.
- On Sunday, Victoria Police confirmed the state's first fatality in the bushfire emergency after human remains were found east of Seymour in the Longwood bushfire footprint near a vehicle off Yarck Road at Gobur.
- The Longwood blaze had been burning through vast areas for several days, with authorities cutting off parts and urging residents to avoid unsafe zones until declared safe.
- Police said the remains were found about 100 metres from a vehicle off Yarck Road, and the person has not been formally identified; police will prepare a report for the Coroner's office.
- Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan announced $19.5m in immediate support, a disaster recovery payment of $1000 per adult, and more than 70 aircraft and thousands of personnel deployed.
- Authorities say the coming weeks will be critical with large fires still burning, while federal funding and the Australian Defence Force support debris removal and restoration.
