How uncomfortable shoes affect most Americans’ lives
More than half of Americans, 56%, said they regularly buy shoes they later regret because discomfort makes them unworn.
A Talker Research survey of 2,000 Americans, commissioned by Skechers, found that 56% regularly buy shoes they later regret due to discomfort, wasting an average of $279 on unworn painful footwear.
Lingering pain from uncomfortable shoes lasts two days on average, with respondents experiencing discomfort from their feet to backs , knees , ankles , and hips .
In the study, 65% of runners confessed they previously purchased shoes based on appearance rather than feel, yet 87% agreed that having the right shoe is the difference between an amazing and horrible run.
However, three-quarters of people wish they had prioritized supportive shoes earlier in life, typically beginning to prioritize truly supportive footwear at age 34 on average.
Running popularity surges with Gen Z leading participation, followed by millennials , Gen X , and baby boomers , all prioritizing comfort and durability in future shoe selections.
