Understanding JNIM’s Expansion Beyond the Sahel
Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, the main jihadist movement in the central Sahel, has embarked on an expansion that has put West Africa on alert. While territorial conquest is not the group’s main priority, threatened states should prepare by better understanding vulnerabilities and reviving regional cooperation.
The JNIM "Allah Fighters" are divided on the subject. Young cadres opt for the conquest of new prestigious territories. The wisest are conservative on the subject and choose the consolidation of the gains. Founded in 2017 in Mali, the Islamic and Muslim Support Group (JNIM) has become the main jihadist organization in the Central Sahel.
