BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA, JUL 25 – Three workers were trapped by two large rockfalls and rescued after more than 60 hours underground with support from drones, remote-controlled equipment, and emergency teams.
- At the Red Chris mine in Iskut, rescue crews reached three workers late Thursday, after two rockfalls on Tuesday blocked their exit and cut off communication.
- Since Tuesday, July 22, three Hy-Tech Drilling workers were trapped, after two rockfalls blocked the access tunnel at the Red Chris mine, cutting off their escape route.
- According to Newmont Corp., the remote-controlled scoop dug away a massive rockfall, estimated to be 20 to 30 meters long and seven to eight meters high.
- Rescued workers received medical and wellness support, and their families had been notified post-rescue.
- Newmont Corp. plans a comprehensive investigation, shares lessons industry-wide, and expresses gratitude to its industry partners.
