How the federal government’s proposed digital regulator would work
The commission would oversee online safety and privacy rules and could fine companies up to $25 million for serious offences.
Ottawa plans to create a new digital regulator to enforce online safety and privacy rules, taking over from the privacy commissioner.
The Liberal government introduced Bill C-34 on digital safety and Bill C-36 on privacy in June, which would be managed by the Digital Safety and Data Protection Commission of Canada.
The commission will have five members appointed by cabinet, with the power to issue binding orders and levy fines up to $10 million or 3% of an organization's global revenue.
