During the 1942–1945 Japanese occupation of Indonesia, then a Dutch colony, around 40,000 soldiers were interned in brutal conditions while 19,000 Dutch citizens died during the conflict.
Naruhito acknowledged the "agonising experiences" of those interned in POW camps, stating it was "deeply heartbreaking" that people continue to bear the pain of that time.
Peggy Stein, chair of Indisch Platform 2.0, noted the Emperor's words showed recognition of wartime suffering, yet her organisation continues to press for a formal apology while survivors remain.
Beyond the memorial, the imperial couple's itinerary includes planting a cherry tree in the Amsterdamse Bos and viewing a Johannes Vermeer painting loaned to the Nakanoshima Museum of Art.
