How Reyna Grande’s ‘Migrant Heart’ drew inspiration from Sandra Cisneros
Grande says Cisneros helped her turn childhood trauma and migration into a memoir about healing and identity.
Author Reyna Grande has published her new memoir, Migrant Heart, following her acclaimed works The Distance Between Us and A Dream Called Home.
Sandra Cisneros convinced Grande to write the memoir, encouraging her to embrace her own voice after years of avoiding the sound of it.
Migrant Heart addresses heavy personal topics including sexual abuse, aging, and menopause, with Grande using the writing process to heal childhood trauma about being mocked for her voice.
Writing the book allowed Grande to "make space for both" trauma and triumph; she describes the cover as "stunning" and customized a jacket for her tour.
Beyond her own work, Grande remains an avid reader citing authors like Sonia Nazario and Valeria Luiselli as she continues using writing to process her complex journey.
