Shawn Eichorst Appointed as New University of Wisconsin Director of Athletics
Eichorst returns to Wisconsin after eight years at Texas and will lead a program facing rising costs and pressure to boost fundraising.
On Wednesday, July 1, 2026, the University of Wisconsin named Shawn Eichorst as its new athletic director. The Wisconsin native and former Texas deputy athletic director returns to the Big Ten to lead the Badgers.
Working under legendary coach and athletic director Barry Alvarez from 2006 to 2011, Eichorst previously served as a senior administrator at Wisconsin. His hiring brings the Lone Rock native back to his home state following his tenure at Texas.
University officials set Eichorst's annual salary at $1.6 million, including built-in increases and incentives. This compensation exceeds predecessor Chris McIntosh's $1.5 million annual salary during the 2025-26 academic year.
Arriving after a 2017 departure from Nebraska and eight years at Texas, Eichorst replaces Chris McIntosh, who resigned in April to join the Big Ten office. The new director must address fan expectations and navigate the Badgers' football program performance.
Scheduled to begin July 13, Eichorst faces the immediate task of rebuilding fan trust in the athletic administration. He aims to lead the department toward academic and competitive excellence as Wisconsin looks forward.
