As part of the inspection drive to know how many taxi drivers in Maharashtra know Marathi language, the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) on Friday issued notices to 1,499 non-Marathi-speaking auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers across Maharashtra for not having enough working knowledge of Marathi language. In Maharashtra, the Transport Department conducted a Marathi language practical test for 5,211 commercial drivers, with 777 failing and 4,434 passing. Of these, 722 drivers are from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. All have received a notice to learn Marathi within a month.
The state government has started a campaign to make Amrathi rickshaw and taxi drivers in the state learn Marathi. So far, one and a half lakh drivers have applied for this campaign and most of them have passed the Marathi exam. While those who have not have passed have been served notices.
